American Quarter Horses Pictures - Breed Description

American Quarter Horses have heavy bones, muscles clinging firmly to them. Legs are straight and powerful, and they are set widely apart. Forelegs are well set at the sides of well-sprung and roomy chest. Deep sloping shoulders provide for safe and comfortable riding. The underline is well defined. It tucks cleanly to the flank. The back is short, straight and powerful. The neck is medium long, its muscles being flexible and elastic enough to allow free breathing in any position.

Head is not very long and quite broad, with small ears placed well apart. Jaws are well defined, and they emphasize agility and strength. Lips are firm and tough. Eyes are widely set and convey the expression of kindness and intelligence. Nostrils are big and moving.

American Quarter Horses occur in a variety of colors. There are 13 admissible variations. However, sorrel color (reddish-brown) is the most preferable one. Other variants include chestnut, grullo, palomino, black, brown, bay, buckskin, dun, gray, red dun, red roan and blue roan. American Quarter Horses have distinctive white markings on their legs below hock joints and on the muzzle.
