The just formed American Quarter Horses Association (AQHA) in 1940 recognized American Quarter Horses as a breed. This is the most influential club in the world, and it counts over 300,000 members. This organization provides knowledge for horse-fanciers around the world, and monitors the condition of the breed in the world.
The AQHA is also instrumental in conducting races and recreation activities for people of all life styles. It provides knowledge on training, handling and health care to potential owners and those who already have horses in their possession.
This club was founded with the goal of salvaging the breed, which started falling out of use during massive railroad construction in the 1st half of the 20th century, a time when engine power supplanted the horse as power. Enthusiasts firmly decided to save the breed from vanishing and founded the club. It was the official beginning of American Quarter horses.

Gentleness is crucial in upbringing, although misbehavior requires punishment. English colonists, who were ardent short distance racers, brought the first ancestors of the Quarter Horse to America in the 1600s. They arranged competitive down-the-street races and the fastest species became breeding stock for future competitions and referred to as Celebrated American Quarter Running Horses. In 1940, the breed received an official status and the American Quarter Horse became registered.
